Beware the Little White Rabbit
IT was seedy, even for a bar; dim enough to hide the dirt, smoky enough to blur faces, and loud enough not to overhear the illicit trading. Drinks were overpriced and watered down, but for making deals that were best kept secret, this place was golden.

The scariest aspect was the clientele. Murderers, slave traffickers, drug dealers, and mercenaries – all in a mix of the worse scum. Keeping one hand on her blaster was a justifiable precaution. It also let anyone who looked her way know she wouldn’t go without a fight.

An Oryctolagian, a species resembling a white rabbit once popular on the now-dead Earth but here as big as a human, hopped past, his gravity boots clunking heavily on the stone floor. She had no use for the creatures. Sneaks, thieves, and liars, they fit in with these bottom-feeders.

Your Highness, I will know which rabbit is the guilty one if I can see him dance. If you would command them, please? Once I find him, I will be off.

~Alice, Alice Through the Wormhole ~BEWARE THE LITTLE WHITE RABBIT

This week I've tried to give you guys trips down the rabbit hole that are different, unique in the ways they pull the classic into new and intriguing shapes. I am very excited to have BEWARE THE LITTLE WHITE RABBIT be the last book I review, mostly because it packs so much in it. Really I'm giving you thirteen stories in one to peruse, because this piece of literature is an anthology. The voices of 13 different authors takes us on journeys we probably wouldn't have imagined for ourselves. The connecting theme in all of these different tales is that they all feature The White Rabbit. Sometimes he's an enemy, a friend, a background character, a momentary obstacle, or a symbol of disease from a fevered dream. Aside from that each story is a standalone, a creative one of a kind in terms of how the author decides to refashion Wonderland.

Alice has always been, in the classic story, a character meant to be reimagined. In my mind she's a sort of fill in the space character, easily adopted by a new voice and given layers suitable to the new environment. There's a space Alice with a vengeful fondness for tea, an Alice trying to survive amid a world taken over by robots, and so much more. Each version of the character is strong in their own way, and each of them carries a creative branding that makes their story intriguing and different. Did you ever imagine an Alice whose real name was of Chinese origin? Well you will after you read the story that wraps a Chinese based tale with Lewis Carroll's work. I think one of my favorite scenes is in a story that heavily follows the classic scene with Lobsters doing the Quadrille dance, refocusing on it and adding unique twists.

As an anthology, this book becomes a read that is easy but can be portioned out. Read them all at once, read one tale at a time, go back and revisit your favorites over and over. Though I'll warn you that picking a favorite out of this batch is rather hard, they are all so mind blowlingly amazing. Thirteen Wonderland themed ventures for the price of one, can't really beat an offer like that. Some tales are darker than others, some are more character driven, others are practices in world building, and others focus on badass science fiction-y action scenes. What each author finds a way of mastering is bringing the vivid, snarky, half mad narration of Alice in Wonderland to life in ways that fit in with the changes they make to the setting. I literally kept putting the book down in awe and thinking "I WOULD NEVER HAVE THOUGHT TO DO THAT, OH MY GOSH."

If you want to take a sip from the DRINK ME bottle and fall down the rabbit hole into thirteen different Wonderlands, then BEWARE THE LITTLE WHITE RABBIT is something you should most definitely consider checking out.

This cover is enchanting. A more grown up Alice following a white rabbit into  background that looks like the page of the book. It shows how the authors of this anthology take us into Wonderlands within Wonderland and the classic tale we know.
