Books

Okay, so this isn't a fairy tale per say (Though who knows, once we read it, maybe!), but the info on Anna Banks' new publishing deal was released and she's moving on from mermaids to princesses!

Here's a brief synopsis:

Liz Szabla at Feiwel and Friends has acquired Nemesis, a YA fantasy by Anna Banks, in a two-book deal. In the story, a princess who possesses the power to create energy escapes her father, who wishes to weaponize it, only to be captured by another kingdom where she discovers that her powers could be used to fight a terrible plague. Publication is planned for spring 2016; Lucy Carson of the Friedrich Agency brokered the deal for world rights.

I don't know how long ago the publishing deal was announced, but I recently heard of a new book from Sarah Prineas called ASH & BRAMBLE.It's coming out September 2015 from HarperCollins!

Here's a brief synopsis:

Sarah Prineas's ASH & BRAMBLE, about a heroine who fights to explode the myth of the "happily ever after" fairy tale ending enforced by the sinister Godmother and forge her own path to Harper Children's for publication in May 2015.

There's one more new publishing announcement to focus on, and this one is from Sarah Beth Durst! Again, it likely isn't fairy tale related, but some of her books have been, and others still have unique lore in them, so I'd like to focus on Sarah Beth Durst's THE GIRL WHO COULDN'T DREAM, out next fall!

Here's a brief synopsis:

Anne Hoppe at Clarion Books has acquired YA author Sarah Beth Durst's debut middle-grade novel, The Girl Who Could Not Dream. The book tells of a girl whose family owns a secret store where they buy, bottle, and sell dreams, but who can't have any of her own, and the adventure that she and her pet monster go on when someone starts kidnapping dreamers. Publication is planned for fall 2015; Andrea Somberg at Harvey Klinger negotiated the deal for world rights.

How about a cover reveal? HarperCollins recently released its 2015 Winter Catalog, and there's a new fairy tale in the mix! Have you heard of it? It's called A WICKED THING and was written by Rhiannon Thomas.

Here's the cover:

And here's a brief summary:

A spinning wheel. A prick of a finger. A terrible curse.

One hundred years after falling asleep, Princess Aurora wakes up to the kiss of a handsome prince and a broken kingdom that has been dreaming of her return. All the books say that she should be living happily ever after. But as Aurora understands all too well, the truth is nothing like the fairytale.

Her family is long dead. Her “true love” is a kind stranger. And her whole life has been planned out by political foes while she slept. Everyone expects Aurora to marry her betrothed and restore magic and peace to the kingdom before revolution tears it apart. But after a lifetime spent locked in a tower for her own safety, Aurora longs for the freedom to make her own choices. When she meets a handsome rebel, he tempts her to abandon everything for a different kind of life.

As Aurora struggles to make sense of her new world, she begins to fear that the curse has left its mark on her, a fiery and dangerous thing that might be as wicked as the witch who once ensnared her.

With her wedding day drawing near, Aurora must make the ultimate decision on how to save her kingdom: marry the prince or run.

Finally, a new fairy tale collection featuring stories from five different authors released last month! FIVE GLASS SLIPPERS introduces us to five different versions of Cinderella. I want to read this now!

Synopsis:

ONE BELOVED STORY, FIVE EXCITING WRITERS

What happens when Cinderella is so painfully shy that she cannot bear the idea of attending the royal ball? Or when the slipper fits . . . but on the wrong girl? What happens when Cinderella is determined to oust an imposter prince from her rightful throne? Or when she is a cendrillon miner working from a space station orbiting a cthonian planet? What happens when Cinderella, a humble housemaid, is sent with a message for a prisoner trapped in a frightening fairy circus?

Here is Cinderella as you have never met her before, wearing glass slippers and off on unforgettable adventures!

BROKEN GLASS:

Emma CliftonThe slipper fits . . . but on the wrong girl! Rosalind never once danced with Prince Marius at the ball, for she is in love with his brother Henry. But they must work quickly, for dark deeds are afoot, and the kingdom is poised on the brink of disaster.

THE WINDY SIDE OF CARE:
Rachel HeffingtonAlisandra is determined to have her rights. She knows that she is the king’s secretly dispossessed daughter, the true heir to the throne. A CINDER’S TALE:

There is no time for dreaming, however, when danger threatens the space station, and Elsa and her fellow miners are tested to the limits of their courage.

THE MOON MASTER’S BALL:

Movies

Disney is planning to turn two more of their animated movies into live-action ones.

First up, we're getting The Jungle Book. Variety announced this week that Disney has casted newcomer Neel Sethi in the role of Mowgli. Disney will release “The Jungle Book” on Oct. 9, 2015.

Next, Disney also announced that it will be turning its beloved movie Dumbo into a live-action movie. There are few details currently known about the project. Here's a link to the Hollywood Reporter article, the first to break the news!

Finally, Disney has ordered a month of reshoots, according to Broadway World. Is this because of everyone who was complaining about all of the changes from the beloved Stephen Sondheim musical, or did some of the video turn out poorly? Time will tell!

But here, for those of you who haven't seen it, here's the very first Into the Woods teaser trailer!

And...here's a peek at the teaser poster going into theaters:

Here's a little more news to start off your day!

Well, first off, if you didn't already know...

Last year's live airing of The Sound of Music with Carrie Underwood during the holiday season was such a big hit, CBS ordered another musical to air this holiday season. This time around, it's the beloved musical Peter Pan!

The musical will air on December 4th.

This week, we heard our first piece of casting news:

The role of  Captain Hook goes to Christopher Walken!

In this article with CBS announcing his part, Walken announced,

"I started my career in musicals and it's wonderful after all this time, at this point in my career, to be in this classic musical I watched as a child and to work with Neil Meron and Craig Zadan again after 'Hairspray.' It's a chance to put on my tap shoes again."

Walken is on the big screen now in Clint Eastwood's "Jersey Boys," playing a music-loving mob boss.

  1. This is a lot of super exciting news! I hadn't heard any of the new Disney movies announcements, I'm sure this is old news but have you heard of the Cinderella remake with the actress from Downton Abbey? I love all the book announcements too, some of those are definitely going in my TBR! This is such an awesome wrap up of the fairy tale goings-on, I had heard of the Sleeping Beauty one and think it's a unique continuation- can't wait to read. And the five Cinderella stories? Fantastic!

  2. Oooh, NEMESIS and ASH & BRAMBLE both sound promising! I've added them to my Goodreads list, thanks for the head's-up :) I'm not crazy about the cover for A Wicked Thing but I do love the sound of the description. Getting into Aurora's head after she wakes up from the sleeping curse sounds like it'll be very entertaining!

  3. I have heard of some of those books before you mentioned them, but of course haven't read any yet. Ash and Bramble is the one I am most excited for. The Summary really got me interested in A Wicked Curse also. I'm excited about The Jungle Book and Dumbo as well as Cinderella being live action. I'm excited for Into the Woods also. I don't know if I will get the play read before I see the movie. I'm iffy about the Peter Pan musical. I didn't think the Sound of Music one was very good so I would hope this one is better. I listened to the audiobook of Peter Pan and the narrator was amazing and brought that wonderful story to life.
